Thijs Lodewijk (1973), known as LudoWic, is a Dutch musician, composer, and  multidisciplinary artist whose work bridges experimental electronics, forgotten instruments, visual art, and sonic architecture. Born in Venlo and raised in Dongen, he grew up in a household where music and visual expression were inseparable. His father’s musicianship and mother’s visual sensibility formed the roots of a dual artistic identity he continues to explore today. After being accepted into both art school and the conservatory, he chose to study music at Codarts Conservatory in Rotterdam, a decision that set the foundation for his hybrid practice.

In 2014, Lodewijk introduced his autonomous musical identity through the moniker LudoWic, releasing a series of albums built on vintage synthesizers, analog equipment, and tactile sound-making. These early works established a sonic signature defined by the interplay of opposites: angular precision versus organic chaos, order versus instability. His fascination with imperfection and randomness—qualities inherent in old instruments and outdated technologies— remains a cornerstone of his creative process.

Beginning in 2019, LudoWic expanded into sonification and art installations, converting data into sound to make architectural structures audible. He sonified the Gaasperdammertunnel, Eindhoven Airport, and numerous other buildings. In installations such as Wall of Sound, forty-two speakers represent forty-two architectural forms, transforming the built environment into a multi-channel sound sculpture. These works merge his musical and visual languages, reflecting his belief that he “thinks in shapes, depth, color, cadence, texture,” whether composing sound or creating art.

Alongside his solo work, Lodewijk has written and produced music for an array of artists and projects. He co-wrote and produced Wende’s Edison-winning album Mens, collaborated with Sevdaliza and Santan Dave, and composed music for the acclaimed indie video game Katana ZERO. His 2024 album SUPER8 MEMORY brought global attention to his revival of the Trautonium, one of the world’s first synthesizers (1929). Played by pressing and sliding along a metal wire, the Trautonium offers an intensely physical and expressive playing style. LudoWic is one of only two active musicians in the world who own and master the instrument. The album’s unique sound and emotional immediacy earned extraordinary praise from artists across genres, including PeteTownshend, Ólafur Arnalds, Joep Beving, SYML, Patrick Watson, Junkie XL, and even recognition from the Recording Academy. SUPER8 MEMORY established LudoWic as a leading figure in the revival of forgotten electronic instruments.

Horizontal Fall (2025)

On 15 May 2025, LudoWic releases Horizontal Fall, the follow-up to SUPER8 MEMORY. While the earlier album centered on the Trautonium, Horizontal Fall expands the universe of “forgotten” synthesizers to include the pipe organ and the Ondes Martenot, creating a more layered, cinematic sound world. The album explores the sensation of falling without ever reaching the ground—a metaphorical state of surrender, as if entering a vacuum where time suspends and gravity dissolves. Nostalgia and innovation intertwine as sounds from the early 20th century merge with modern electronic forms to create an entirely new sonic architecture.

Live & Artistic Presence

LudoWic has performed at esteemed venues and festivals including Het Concertgebouw, Funkhaus Berlin, Eye Filmmuseum, ADE, Artonov Festival, and November Music. His concerts combine immersive sound with visual sensitivity, emphasizing the physicality of analog instruments. His online presence continues to grow rapidly, with a large following drawn to his rare-instrument demonstrations and expressive performance style.

Today, LudoWic stands at the intersection of electronic music, historical instrument revival, contemporary art, and speculative sound design. Through analog sensitivity, visual thinking, and his dedication to rediscovering forgotten synthesizers, he continues to expand what music can reveal about memory, perception, and the future of sound.
